Second edition of JCAR ATRACE magazine

In December, we published our second JCAR ATRACE digital magazine, available to read in all programme languages here.

This edition focuses on the region of Wallonia in Belgium, with insights from research and policy. We explore water management in the region by discussing the challenges, opportunities, and key initiatives. It features exclusive interviews with Benjamin Dewals from University of Liege and Bénédicte Heindrichs from SPW ARNE.

Furthermore, experts from JCAR ATRACE reflect on the large amount of rainfall in the past 12 months, zooming in on the different sub-areas within our project. Additionally, an article explores the potential of nature-based measures to reduce the impacts of floods and droughts in the future. This includes recent work by students on the Geul river basin and future results for the Vecht.

When it comes to preparation of flood and drought management, research must adapt to the urgency and speed at which action is required. This is where the Rapid Action Team (RAT) studies come in, providing relevant research in a timely manner. We give a glimpse into the 5 new RAT studies we have in the pipeline.

Finally, we introduce our joint long-term research topics (PhD) that will be carried out among the partner institutions in the scope of the knowledge agenda of the programme. Eight long-term research will start in parallel from the end of 2024.
