Exploring regional initiatives towards climate adaptation: Wallonia’s Vesdre Valley visit

© EU mission on adaptation

On 22 May 2024, we took part in a site visit to the Vesdre Valley with stops at Pepinster and Lac de Gileppe. The visit was organised by Service Public de Wallonie (SPW) as part of the Third Forum for the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. It was among the three regional site visits showcasing regional initiatives aimed at climate change adaptation and resilience.

The Vesdre Valley is an example of resilience and innovation in the aftermath of the 2021 floods. The visit demonstrated the wide reconstruction process involved, from crisis management to preventative measures. The extensive efforts put into strengthening resilience against extreme floods in the region have left a lasting impression on the visitors. It was truly commendable to see how the researches from Liège University are actively involved in providing valuable scientific research to aid in the reconstruction and adaptation processes.

About the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change

The Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change supports EU regions, cities, and local authorities in building resilience against climate change impacts. The annual Forum brings together authorities from national, regional, and local levels, European institutions, and friends of the Mission to exchange views and shape the Mission's future direction. Simultaneously, it showcases some of the regional initiatives on adaptation and promotes dialogue among participants. The 2024 Mission Forum was co-organised by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
