At the start of June we had the pleasure of attending the FlashFloodBreaker launch conference in Liège, kicking off its ambitious 4-year program. This innovative project, which bears similarities to JCAR ATRACE, is dedicated to the landscapes of North-West Europe, with a particular emphasis on addressing the challenges posed by flash floods - sudden and intense floods that rapidly submerge low-lying areas within 3 to 6 hours of heavy rainfall.
The event was packed with engaging presentations from local authorities, sectoral agencies, and esteemed scientific organisations, offering valuable insights and perspectives. The visitors delved into the various territorial approaches to managing flood risks and explored different strategies for enhancing resilience to extreme flash flood events in North-West Europe.
Additionally, attendees had the opportunity to participate in a practical field trip to the Vesdre valley and impressive Gileppe Dam, further enriching the experience. The panoramic tower and belvedere offer a remarkable view of the site and its famous “Lion de la Gileppe”. The dam holds a crucial role in regulating floods along the Vesdre River and stands as one of the four major reservoirs in Wallonia, showcasing its significance in water management.
Looking ahead, we look forward the discoveries and advancements that will result from the FlashFloodBreaker project.
